It designs innovative solutions to the problems individuals, families, and communities face as they pursue economic well-being. TDC has a long history of successful innovation in workforce and community development.

  • In the 1970s its Public Service Employment program became a national model for integrating public service jobs into accountable community-development projects.
  • Its Automated Case Management System was implemented in 300 sites around the country.
  • Its Career Advancement Center informed the development of DOL’s One-Stop Career Centers, embraced by the first Bush Administration’s Department of Labor as a national model for serving dislocated workers.
  • Today TDC continues its workforce efforts at a Job Corps Center in Loring (MA) and a Career Advancement Center in Richmond (VA),

Smart-Mart.org is part of a TDC program called Worksphere®, an effort to revolutionize the pursuit of economic well-being by cultivating the understanding and practice of sustainable employability and global community capitalism. Worksphere aims to help communities mobilize their residents to research, debate, plan, and incubate new strategies for enduring economic security, social inclusion, and business formation; create new civic infrastructure; invent new labor market institutions and mechanisms; recalibrate relationships among government, civil society, business, philanthropy, and community members; and re-cast work and learning environments, ownership relationships, and capital markets.
